Education

I decided to become an educator during my Senior year of high school and completed my B.A. in Social Science with a Minor in English at San Diego State University in 2004 with hopes of teaching History at the high school level. That changed when I became a participant of the Camp Adventure program where I began working with the children of military personnel on bases throughout the globe. During that time, I worked with children in a number of settings from day camps to child development centers and also in after-school programs and I realized that I wanted to become an elementary school teacher. As a result, I began attending the University of Toledo where I eventually received an M.Ed. in Elementary and Early Childhood Education in 2010.

Experience

During my time at the University of Toledo, I worked as a Peer Mentor where I served as a live-in tutor and academic advisor for the Education Cluster Floor at Parks Tower which is the Freshman dormitory on campus. In addition, I also served as a Student Teacher at several elementary schools in the area before returning to San Diego to complete my program. In addition, I served as a Substitute Teacher in the South Bay Union School District for six years during which time I worked with students from Kindergarten through 6th grade. Galileo once said, “You cannot teach a person anything. You can only help them to discover what is already within themselves” and I cannot agree more. I firmly believe that everyone has their own unique potential that is just waiting to be revealed and I strive to do my best to help them realize their gifts.

Hobbies

When I step out of my role as an educator, I love to get in touch with my kinesthetic side by surfing, running, skateboarding, and hiking whenever I get the chance. I love being around the ocean and spend as much time as I can there. I even had the opportunity to combine my love of the ocean and education when I was the Keiki (Youth) Coach for a local outrigger canoe club. When I’m not busy working out, I also love to get in touch with my foodie side and try new foods especially of the healthier variety. If I have some extra time, I also love watching foreign films and food documentaries on Netflix. In addition, I have had the honor of serving on the Board of Directors for several community groups such as the Pacific Island Festival Association and the Jonathan Tarr Foundation.
